Education Minister Nadiem Makarim Clarifies Obligatory Conscription Rumors

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Nadiem Makarim in declared that he was shocked by the news about plans to present mandatory conscription for college students.

” I was shocked by the news as I heard about it since conscription had never ever been mentioned in a number of discussions held with the Defense Ministry,” said Nadiem throughout a live broadcast in his Instagram account @nadiemmakarim on Wednesday, August 26, 2020.

According to his defense, the Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry just went over the Merdeka School program with the defense ministry. The Merdeka School is a plan that releases trainees to participate in any type of training programs that fit their requirements, which is exclusively voluntary.

Nadiem gave examples of programs such as management military programs, intelligence, or other similar programs throughout a student’s entire term.

” But we never ever discussed the mandatory conscription. I don’t understand what it is about and surely have not made any choices regarding it,” Nadiem guarantees.

Formerly reported, Defense deputy minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono likewise clarified that no compulsory conscription will be presented to campuses and that the defense ministry is only forming a program called ‘ bela negara’ ( protecting the state) for university student.
