Legislator Urges Public to Not Take Issue of Police Chief’s Religion

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta House of Representatives’ (DPR) law commission legislator Jazilul Fawaid on Wednesday lauded the appointment of Comm. Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo as the new National Police Chief by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“My hope is for pak Sigit to show the affectionate and wise side of him and encourage him to communicate with every societal group as it would make his task easier,” wrote the legislator from the PKB faction on Wednesday, January 13.

He said that with a candidate such as Listyo, the House will not have any reasons to reject the President’s choice.

Moreover, the PKB party deputy also encouraged people to not have an issue with Listyo’s religious belief and recalls Indonesia’s five state Ideology (Pancasila) which guarantees equal rights for every Indonesian citizen.

“Don’t make religious belief an issue here. Let us use religion as a reason to unite,” said Jazilul Fawaid.

This comes as an indirect response after Listyo’s candidacy as the National Police Chief garnered a comment from politician Amien Rais on January 9 who urged President Jokowi to avert from choosing a police chief that would “spark disquiet” among the Muslim community.
