DPD senator advises celebrations to keep an eye on drafting of Papua autonomy law

Jakarta – Regional Representatives Council (DPD RI) Commission I Deputy Chair Filep Wamafma advised relevant parties to work together to keep an eye on the drafting of government policies to carry out Law No. 2 of 2021 on Autonomy for Papua.

” Appropriate celebrations must keep an eye on the progress in preparing for government regulations on autonomy for Papua to make sure the ratified draft will be useful for Papuans,” Senator Wamafma stated while receiving West Papua provincial legislature members, who submitted recommendations for the government policies at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Monday.

Wamafma, who acts as member of the DPD RI work group to draft government guidelines on Papua’s autonomy, admired the recommendations submitted by the local legislature as an essential public input to make sure that the guideline will mirror the general public needs and position.

” The proposals sent by the West Papuan provincial legislature would be helpful for the DPD RI throughout the drafting of federal government policies,” the senator noted.

Wamafma expressed hope that the federal government regulation on autonomy for Papua would use complete autonomy for the province and a solution to problems emerging during the initial two decades of local autonomy in Papua.

” We will promote the federal government policy to not be midway however a complete local autonomy for Papua,” he stated.

Drafting of the government guideline on autonomy for Papua would include the DPD RI, Legislature (DPR RI), and the federal government. The federal government guideline would consist of series of laws regulating main points appropriate to the Papua Autonomy Law.

The government will draft policies on special autonomy rights, the consultation of West Papuan provincial legislature and district/city legislature members, healthcare responsibilities, establishment of unique companies, and budget management under the special autonomy scheme.
