Government firm over not holding settlement on Papua’s independence

For the federal government, the presence of Papua, both Papua Province and West Papua Province, as part of the Unitary State of Indonesia, is last.

Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD made it amply clear that the government was averse to the idea of holding settlements relating to the need for Papua’s self-reliance.
” For the government, the presence of Papua, both Papua Province and West Papua Province, as part of the Unitary State of Indonesia, is last. There is no other method, no negotiation for self-reliance, for separation,” Mahfud clarified at a virtual press conference here on Thursday.

Mahfud made the declaration in connection with the dispute in between security personnel and the criminal armed group in Intan Jaya District of Papua in the previous couple of days.

Violence normally erupted in the run-up to the anniversary of the Papuan self-reliance movement on December 1.

” Now it happened once again, as there are individuals, who want to separate. They operate in cooperation with foreign provocateurs or make their own motion, and we need to stop and control them considering that it protests the law,” the minister highlighted.

Mahfud drew attention to a referendum, authorized by the UN General Assembly, in Resolution No. 2504 that had occurred in Papua in 1969.

” Since then, there is no other way for Papua, for specific celebrations in Papua, to require independence,” Mahfud described.

Speaking in connection with the armed conflict in Intan Jaya that declared four lives– 2 military workers, one civilian and a priest– Mahfud verified that the authority will set up a joint team to investigate the case.

” The government will establish a joint examination group that can objectively check out the case to avoid debate (around the dispute),” he included.
