Graft case: Prosecution seeks 10-year prison term for ex-minister

Jakarta – The Corruption Obliteration Commission (KPK) has looked for a 10- year jail sentence and a Rp500,000 fine, comparable to 6 months’ jail time, for former minister of youth and sports, Imam Nahrawi, in an alleged graft case.

The case was heard by the Jakarta Corruption Court on Friday, and was broadcast through video conferencing.

During the hearing, KPK prosecutor Ronald Worotikan charged the former minister with getting Rp115 billion in allurements and gratuities worth Rp8.648 billion from officials of the National Sports Committee.

Nahrawi, who belongs to the National Awakening Party (PKB), attended the hearing at the KPK head office, but just some of his attorneys and the corruption court’s judges existed in the courtroom, as part of efforts to keep physical distancing and reduce risk of coronavirus infections.

At the hearing, the district attorney also urged Nahrawi to return a few of the bribes and gratuities, totaling up to Rp19,154,203,882, to the states, no behind one month after the judges find him guilty, and the verdict is final and executory.

” If the offender fails to return the cash, his private properties will be seized and auctioned off as a replacement. If the defendant’s properties do not compensate the charge (quantity), he would invest an extra 3 years in prison,” Worotikan said.

Besides seeking a prison sentence and a fine, the district attorney also asked the judges to withdraw Nahrawi’s political rights for a certain time period.

While stating the charges versus the minister, the district attorney described Nahrawi and his individual assistant, Miftahul Ulum, have been shown to have accepted Rp115 billion in bribes from KONI’s secretary-general, Ending Hamidy and KONI’s general treasurer, Johnny E Awuy.

The bribes were used to smooth the method for KONI’s grant propositions throughout the2018 In 2018, Indonesia’s nationwide sports committee had asked for grants for athletes’ recruitment, assistance, and training for the 18 th Asian Games and the 3rd Asian Para Games. (INE)
