Pandemic-induced stress raises threat for GERD: Research

Jakarta – Tension elements, particularly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, can trigger gastroesophageal reflux illness (GERD), a disease taking place when stomach acid frequently flows back into the tube linking the mouth and esophagus causing certain symptoms and issues.
This declaration was made by the medical staff of the Gastroenterology Division in the Internal Medicine Department of the Cipto Mangunkusumo Health Center – Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (RSCM – FKUI) Rabbinu Rangga Pribadi.

” Research study reveals that almost half of the GERD clients report tension as a significant element intensifying their symptoms,” Pribadi noted during a health webinar, written here on Saturday.

The medical personnel drew attention to the close link between tension and the development of GERD.

Presently, a number of people are under pressure after having lost their jobs, family members, and likewise experiencing tension because they can not take a trip freely in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tension and anxiety can raise the threat for GERD. In addition, leading an unhealthy lifestyle, cigarette smoking, and being obese are other elements that increase the probability of experiencing signs of GERD. Other risk aspects for the development of GERD are eating large amounts of food, drugs, being pregnant, consuming foods that can set off acid reflux, in addition to resting after consuming.

GERD symptoms consist of heartburn and also a feeling of food going up the throat, instead of down, thus triggering a sour or bitter taste in the mouth, likewise called as regurgitation. Other more widespread signs make up coughing, hoarseness, discomfort while swallowing, tooth disintegration, chest discomfort, a bitter taste on the tongue, and a swelling in the throat.

As opposed to stomach pains, GERD is more likely to be related to stand acid. For those with GERD, the stomach acid rises into the esophagus.
Based upon the 2016 data, some 24.8 percent of the population in Indonesia experience GERD.

Pribadi kept in mind that GERD can be treated through medication, though it is solitarily not effective if patients do not switch to leading a much healthier lifestyle. GERD patients need to change their lifestyle for the better by keeping a perfect body weight, exercising frequently, stopping cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol, along with lowering the intake of fatty foods.

Sleeping with the head raised about 20 centimeters high; avoiding intake of big quantities of food, especially at night; avoiding snacking at night; and not lying down for at least 3 hours after eating are also good measures to avoid GERD.

Pribadi explained that GERD patients must go through an evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract or an upper endoscopy if symptoms of the disease does not decrease instantly after taking medications and leading a healthier way of life.

Further tests are also required if the patient experiences symptoms or threat signs, such as continuous throwing up, throwing up blood, black feces, difficulty in swallowing, anemia, and weight reduction.

” This illness does not trigger death, however it considerably interferes with the patient’s day-to-day activities,” he mentioned.

Pribadi verified that the treatment for GERD varies from individual to private. Clients must seek advice from a medical professional, so that they get optimal treatment.
