IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission B chairman Abdul Aziz asked the city administration to follow the central government’s decision to not raise the minimum wage in 2021.
“Our current focus is to survive, rather than to develop because many people have been laid off so the number must not increase,” said Abdul in the City Hall, Tuesday, October 27, 2020.
The chairman of the commission overseeing the economy argued that all parties should be wise amid the weakening economic condition due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The government had already been facing the impact of the recession, he added.
“The economy is experiencing a deep decline, and by that, I think it is wise to prevent more people from becoming victims,” Abdul said.
During the pandemic, employers had difficulties in paying workers’ salaries following the economic slowdown. Not a few companies even carried out massive layoffs.
“What’s important is that all entrepreneurs can survive and all people can still have a job,” Abdul remarked. “Inshallah, when the situation is recovered next year, we can go back or even have a better condition than before.”
Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah decided that there would be no increase in workers’ salaries next year through a Circular Letter No. M/11/HK.04/X/2020 on a minimum wage in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
