AstraZeneca Covid-19 Vaccine Safe for Elderly, Says Health Ministry

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Indonesian government would receive tens of millions of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines through the multilateral cooperation with Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI)-Covax Facility in the first quarter of this year.

“This is the success of our diplomacy, we will get free vaccine access through Covax and will certainly complement the current types of vaccines,” said the Health Ministry’s spokesperson, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, as quoted from the ministry’s official website on Sunday, January 31.

Siti said the vaccine was safe for use on elderly people aged 60 years and over. “This is one of the vaccines that can be used for people age 60 years and over which we know that this group has the highest mortality rate,” she explained.

As quoted from the GAVI letter dated January 29, the alliance confirmed to deliver 13.7 million to 23.1 million doses of AstraZeneca for Indonesia in two stages, 25-35 percent in the initial stage and 65-75 percent in the second stage.

Indonesia reportedly needs 364 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine for 182 million target recipients. The government has taken five schemes to procure the vaccine, which four of them through bilateral cooperations.

The distribution of AstraZeneca would be carried out after it received the EUL (Emergency Use Listing) from WHO and was validated by the Independent Allocation of Vaccines Task Force (AIVG).
