BMKG Makassar Detects 28 Earthquakes in Majene

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Makassar – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Makassar IV recorded 28 earthquakes that occurred in Majene, West Sulawesi from January 14-15, 2021.

“Since the 5.9 magnitude earthquake on January 14, there have been 28 earthquakes,” said the Makassar BMKG spokesperson Syarifuddin on Friday morning, January 15.

However, he said that the latest powerful quake that killed at least three people and damaged many buildings was reported at 6.2 magnitudes and occurred in the early hours of Friday at 02: 28 Central Indonesian Time (WITA).

“[The quake] was followed by 19 aftershocks,” Syarifuddin added.

At 08: 25 WITA, a 4.4 magnitude quake hit the region again, precisely in the northeast Majene at a depth of 8 kilometers.

The Mamuju Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that 24 people were injured, three people killed, and 2,000 residents were evacuated to a safer place.

Based on a preliminary report issued by the Majene BPBD, there were landslides in three points along the Majene-Mamuju main road following the earthquake. Besides, 62 houses, one community health center (Puskesmas), and the office of Malunda district military command building were damaged.
