Gov’t Build New Prisons in Nusakambangan

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Minister of Justice and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna H. Laoly visited Nusa Kambangan Island to observe the construction of three new prisons on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

The construction of the new prisons is aimed at solving issues of overcrowding which often happens in prisons in Indonesia. The three newly built maximum security prisons are the Ngaseman, Glandakan, and Nirbaya prisons. Yasonna also mentioned the cost of the construction.

“Our attempt to fix this problem is to build a new one, but it’s expensive. If we are to balance the construction with crime rates, the state could not afford it with IDR 131 billion, that does not include bed, development, and others,” said Yasonna in a written statement on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

Especially for drug case inmates, they need maximum security prison, not only for them but also for the dealer convicts. “We will build another one if we have the fund because Nusakambangan has 21.000 hectares [of land],” said the minister.

During the observation, the minister was accompanied by Officials from the Justice Ministry and Prison.
