Megawati Slams Govt as Staple Food Prices Climb

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta PDIP chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri in the virtual commemoration of the political party’s 49th anniversary on Monday criticized the soaring prices of staple foods such as cooking oil and chilli pepper.

She insisted that the same problems occured despite the nation’s entering its 76th year of independence. She said her statement should serve as the government’s means of self-criticism, Antaranews reported.

Pak Jokowi, you can imagine, I often saw prices of chilli, cooking oil, and garlic. I find it ghastly, why is it classic?” said Megawati in her political speech on Monday, January 10. “Seventy-six years of independence and we’re still like that. What’s wrong, this is self-criticism. I also offered criticism during my days at the DPR.”

The prices of basic necessities remain relatively high. This condition is at least found at the Palembang traditional market, South Sumatra on Sunday, January 9.

There are currently three staple foods with relatively high prices, namely Fortune brand packaged cooking oil at Rp. 18,500 per kg from the usual Rp. 14,000 per kg. Chicken eggs are priced at Rp. 23,000 per kg from the usual Rp. 19,000 per kg, and purebred chicken is Rp. 36,000 per kg from the usual Rp. 30,000 per kg.
