MRT Jakarta Operates Normally after Last Night’s Protest-Turned-Riot

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – MRT Jakarta is operating normally this morning despite the mass protests against the newly-enacted Job Creation Omnibus Law turned into chaos on Thursday night. The Corporate Secretary Division Head, Muhamad Kamaluddin, ensured that all 13 stations are open.

“Starting tomorrow, Friday, October 9, MRT operational services in all stations from Lebak Bulus to HI Roundabout will return to normal,” said Kamaluddin in a written statement on late Thursday, October 8.

The operational hours remain the same at 5 a.m. until 7 p.m. This schedule is valid during the Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) period in the capital city. “With the train headway of 10 minutes,” he added.

Workers and students staged another demonstration protesting the new omnibus law in the Horse Statue area, Harmoni, and the Parliament Building. They demanded the jobs law be revoked.

The protest in the Horse Statue area turned into chaos. The police post station and 11 Transjakarta bus stops were burned down. Several MRT facilities were also damaged, including the glass entrance door of HI Roundabout Station and Setiabudi Astra Station.

Due to the protest, MRT Jakarta closed seven stations and only served commuters from Lebak Bulus Station to Blok M BCA Station. All underground stations were also closed at 6 p.m., an hour earlier from the schedule.
