MUI to Deliberate the Halal Fatwa of Sinovac Vaccines

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on Friday will hold a ‘fatwa plenary hearing’ regarding the halal aspect of the Covid-19 vaccine produced by a Chinese biopharmaceutical firm Sinovac Biotech. The meeting will discuss its findings in the MUI field audit that was commenced several days ago.

“The fatwa commission plenary upon discussing the Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine’s sharia aspect will be conducted on Friday,” said MUI head of halal and fatwa, Asrorun Niam to journalists on Thursday, Jan. 7.

Previously, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin had asked the MUI to immediately issue the halal fatwa for the vaccines before January 13, which is the deadline announced by the government for the inaugural vaccination.

Indonesia will start the first phase of the vaccination with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as the first recipient before it is given simultaneously to healthcare workers across the nation.

However, the President asserted that the vaccination will only be commenced after the Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) issues an emergency use authorization and the MUI grants the vaccine halal status.
